KS5: Taking Control
HIP helps Post-16 students settle positively into sixth form life while developing the mindset, habits and confidence needed to perform well.
The move into Post-16 brings a significant increase in academic demands, independent study and personal responsibility.
This workshop supports students through that transition by helping them build productive routines, stronger study habits and greater confidence in managing sixth form life. Students will learn the value of time management, task prioritisation, and maintaining a productive study environment. Through practical tools delivered in a fun and engaging environment, they will explore how to create daily plans, eliminate distractions, and use study periods effectively.
HIP encourages personal responsibility—owning mistakes and learning from them as a foundation for growth. Above all, students will discover that lasting success is built on discipline, not fleeting motivation.
Themes of The Workshop
Discipline Over Motivation
In this workshop, we’ll challenge the common belief that motivation is key to success. While motivation is a fleeting feeling that comes and goes, discipline is the consistent action that drives real progress. We’ll show that discipline is the key to achievement—building habits, setting goals, and staying committed—so you can achieve your goals even when motivation fades.
Using AI to Support Learning
We’ve recently added an exciting new AI strand to our Take Control workshop, helping students learn how to use Microsoft Copilot effectively to support revision, learning and academic attainment.
A key message throughout is changing the narrative around AI. Used responsibly, AI can become a powerful learning tool — but students are reminded that AI will not be in the exam hall with them, so using it simply as a shortcut ultimately only disadvantages themselves.
Using our S.C.O.R.E. framework, students learn how to use AI alongside mark schemes and examiner reports to critically reflect on and improve past paper answers — helping build confidence, strengthen preparation and improve exam performance.
We also explore how AI can support students who miss school due to absence — one of the biggest contributors to underachievement. Students learn how lesson notes can be transformed into summaries such as podcasts, videos and mind maps, allowing them to choose formats that best suit their learning style, helping them catch up, stay organised and reduce the overwhelmed feeling of falling behind.
A core message throughout is clear: AI will never replace high-quality teaching in the classroom — but when used correctly, it can be a valuable support tool for learning.
Be Productive
Students will come to understand the significance of cultivating a work environment that is tidy and conducive to learning, as it directly impacts productivity. They will also recognize the necessity of eliminating distractions, such as their mobile phones, to maintain focus. Additionally, students will explore the benefits of exam simulation, realizing how targeted exam strategies, like practicing past papers and engaging in peer marking, can enhance their learning experience and preparation.
Efficiency during Study Periods
To thrive in Post-16, students must maximise their study periods’ efficiency. HIP will support students to craft daily plans, emphasising task prioritisation based on deadlines and time required. This structured to-do list aids in daily organization, ensuring students stay ahead of their demanding workload. Furthermore, it fosters a sense of accomplishment as students track their daily progress, fueling motivation for continued success
Take Responsibility
We stress the importance of taking responsibility for your actions and decisions. True success comes from owning setbacks and learning from them, rather than shifting the blame. Taking responsibility empowers students to grow and turn challenges into opportunities. By embracing this mindset, they set themselves on the path to real and lasting success.
