An emotional wellbeing & positive behaviour support programme

Through interactive workshops, students learn to identify different forms of bullying and understand the impact of their actions on others. The programme emphasises the importance of inclusivity, kindness, and empathy, challenging common excuses for bullying behaviour. Additionally, students are equipped with strategies to address negative behaviour and create a positive and supportive school environment. Workshop 1: Anti-Bullying

The pupils will learn what constitutes bullying behaviour and the conditions necessary for bullying to occur:

1. Targeted Behaviour
2. Repeated Behaviour
3. Imbalance of Power

Additionally, they will understand what does not constitute as bullying and recognise the harm caused by both bullying and false accusations of bullying. Our aim is to reduce instances of bullying and false accusations within the school.

Types of Bullying

Pupils will recognise the different forms of bullying behaviour:

Emotional
Verbal
Cyber
Physical

With this understanding, we introduce the concept of “TOGETHER-STRONGER”, where pupils will learn the importance of calling out negative behaviour.

We will discuss steps to take to play our role in helping bring an end to any potential bullying or mean behaviour.

Challenging Justifications

Common excuses for bullying include:

“It was only a joke.”
“We were only playing a game.”

We will challenge these justifications with reflective questions:

Is everyone laughing?
Is everyone having fun

Workshop 2: Emotional Development

Research strongly concludes that emotional and social intelligence is a greater predictor of future success than IQ.

We will focus on the following crucial emotional intelligence (EI) and social skills:

Kindness:

Pupils will understand how kindness can make others feel valued and supported. When we practice kindness, we create strong bonds of friendship, fostering a sense of belonging. Kindness also has incredible benefits for our own well-being, boosting our mood and increasing happiness levels.

Empathy:

Empathy is the superpower of understanding and sharing the feelings of others. We explore the concept of ‘standing in someone else’s shoes’. Empathy is crucial because it builds bridges of understanding between people, fostering compassion, inclusivity, and strengthening relationships.

We highlight the importance of being able to recognize others’ emotions by observing what ‘they aren’t saying’.

Hunt The Good:

We will teach the importance of seeking out the good in each day and how this can positively impact us, keeping ‘our minds healthy’.

Additionally, the importance of being kind to ourselves is equally emphasised alongside being kind to others.

Workshop 3: Children's Mental Health Week: The Emotional Detectives: February

We explore the ‘big 5’ of emotional development through the lens of the movie ‘inside out.’ Emotional intelligence is a greater predictior of future success than IQ.

We will help children to experience, identify, and manage emotions. This promotes the language needed to build their emotional development, allowing children to normalise negative emotions and give them the tools to navigate them.

This workshop will allow children to explore and engage with the world around them, as well as form positive relationships.

Workshop 3: Tackling Anxiety

“Anxiety, particularly after lockdown and covid. Children are presenting as anxious about things that beforehand would not have bothered them.”

This is a direct quote from our recent survey of primary school teachers. In addition to this, a staggering 75% referenced anxiety issues among their pupils. This aligns with statistics reporting a 40% increase in anxiety levels.

This has inspired us at HIP Psychology to develop a workshop focused on anxiety. By the end of this fun-filled and action-packed workshop, pupils will:

Understand what anxiety is, recognise that it is a common experience, and learn about its different causes.

Learn what happens to our bodies and minds when we experience anxiety.

Be taught powerful, evidence-based tools to help them manage and overcome unhelpful anxieties.
