Fifth Year: Taking Control

Empowering students to manage their anxieties and fears effectively

Senior Cycle can be a challenging period for students, often filled with anxiety. Our ‘Taking Control’ workshop is designed to empower students to manage their anxieties and fears effectively, both in the lead-up to exams and during them. By equipping them with a toolkit of suitable skills, HIP supports students to perform to the best of their abilities and unlock their full potential.

Themes of The Workshop

Embrace The Excitement

Fifth Year is an exciting time! For the first time, you’re in control of your own curriculum. This is a students chance to dive deep into subjects they are passionate about, shaping their education to match their goals.

Discipline Over Motivation

In this workshop, we’ll challenge the common belief that motivation is key to success. While motivation is a fleeting feeling that comes and goes, discipline is the consistent action that drives real progress. We’ll show that discipline is the key to achievement—building habits, setting goals, and staying committed—so you can achieve your goals even when motivation fades.

Consistency v Cramming

Students will explore the significance of maintaining a consistent work ethic versus relying on last-minute cramming. Consistency fosters effective time management, enabling students to stay organized, focused, and confident. By consistently tackling tasks, students can avoid feeling overwhelmed and prevent work from accumulating, ultimately promoting a more balanced and manageable workload

Be Productive

Students will come to understand the significance of cultivating a work environment that is tidy and conducive to learning, as it directly impacts productivity. They will also recognize the necessity of eliminating distractions, such as their mobile phones, to maintain focus. Additionally, students will explore the benefits of exam simulation, realizing how targeted exam strategies, like practicing past papers and engaging in peer marking, can enhance their learning experience and preparation.

Efficiency during Study Time

To thrive in Senior Cycle, students must maximise their study time efficiency. HIP will support students to craft daily plans, emphasising task prioritisation based on deadlines and time required. This structured to-do list aids in daily organization, ensuring students stay ahead of their demanding workload. Furthermore, it fosters a sense of accomplishment as students track their daily progress, fueling motivation for continued success

Take Responsibility

We stress the importance of taking responsibility for your actions and decisions. True success comes from owning setbacks and learning from them, rather than shifting the blame. Taking responsibility empowers students to grow and turn challenges into opportunities. By embracing this mindset, they set themselves on the path to real and lasting success.
