Transition Year – Making Teamwork Work

“Many young people are comfortable communicating online, yet find real‑world group interaction challenging – particularly when it comes to teamwork, listening, speaking up, and navigating different opinions face to face.” Source: OECD research on adolescent collaboration, communication and social interaction.

Teamwork, Communication & Collaboration

Transition Year provides students with valuable opportunities to learn how to work effectively with others, communicate ideas, and navigate group situations in a supportive environment.

At this stage of adolescence, students are increasingly required to work with others, share ideas, listen to different perspectives and communicate effectively in group settings.

The HIP Psychology Transition Year Making Teamwork Work workshop supports students to develop the communication and collaboration skills needed to work positively and confidently with others. Through interactive and practical activities, students learn how to engage more effectively in group situations, build trust, and communicate ideas in a clear and respectful way.

Workshop Overview

This engaging workshop focuses on teamwork, communication and collaboration in everyday school and social contexts. Students learn through experience, taking part in structured exercises that encourage interaction, reflection and shared problem‑solving.

Grounded in psychology and adolescent development, the workshop creates a supportive environment where students can practise communication skills, become more comfortable interacting with others, and learn from one another.

Themes of The Workshop

Communication & listening skills

Effective teamwork depends on clear communication and active listening. In this theme, students explore what effective communication looks like in group settings and why listening is just as important as speaking.

Students develop skills in:

  • Expressing ideas clearly and appropriately
  • Listening to others with attention and respect
  • Understanding and accepting different viewpoints
  • Communicating confidently within a group

Through discussion and practical exercises, students gain insight into how communication styles influence group dynamics and outcomes.

Teamwork, Trust & Group Dynamics

Working with others can feel challenging, particularly when opinions, personalities or confidence levels differ. This theme focuses on how teams function and how trust is developed within a group.

Students take part in activities that explore:

  • Trust in themselves and in others
  • Cooperation and shared responsibility
  • Inclusion and acceptance of different opinions
  • Supporting others and being supported in return

These exercises help students understand their role within a team and how positive collaboration leads to more effective and enjoyable group experiences.

Role Play, Interaction & Confidence in Groups

Many students feel self‑conscious in group interactions or worry about saying the “wrong” thing. This theme uses role‑play and interactive exercises to help students become more comfortable with improvisation, spontaneity and group communication.

In a supportive environment, students:

  • Practise interacting and responding in real‑time
  • Become more confident speaking within a group
  • Learn to adapt communication styles to different situations
  • Develop confidence communicating ideas in an appropriate and respectful way

The emphasis is on participation rather than performance, helping students feel more at ease engaging with others.
