Transition Year – Find Your Voice

“Rates of social anxiety and discomfort with face‑to‑face interaction have increased among adolescents in recent years, alongside reduced opportunities to practise real‑world communication skills.”

Social Skills & Confidence for Everyday Life

Transition Year is a key stage for personal development, independence and social growth. At this stage of adolescence, challenges can include starting and maintaining conversations, speaking confidently to adults, managing phone calls, participating in group discussions, and navigating everyday interactions that require independence and self‑assurance.

This workshop was developed in response to these challenges. The HIP Psychology Transition Year Finding Your Voice workshop supports students to build self‑confidence and develop practical communication skills they can apply in real‑world situations – both now and as they move towards senior cycle and greater independence. A key focus throughout is helping students develop the confidence to communicate clearly, effectively and with greater self‑assurance.

Workshop Overview

This interactive workshop supports students to develop the skills and confidence needed to communicate more comfortably in everyday social situations. Grounded in psychology and adolescent development, the session focuses on practical, real‑life communication rather than performance or presentation skills alone.

As with all HIP Psychology workshops, sessions are fun, engaging, evidence‑based and focused on providing practical tools that students can embed into their everyday lives.

Themes of The Workshop

1. Building Self Confidence

Confidence plays a central role in how students communicate, engage with others and approach new situations. In this theme, students explore what confidence is, how it develops during adolescence, and the common factors that can undermine it.

Using evidence‑based psychological approaches, students learn practical strategies to manage self‑doubt, reduce anxiety and build self‑confidence over time. The focus is on progress rather than pressure, helping students feel more capable and willing to use their voice.

2. Social Skills & Everyday Communication

At this stage of life, everyday communication can feel challenging, particularly in unfamiliar or adult‑led situations. This theme focuses on developing practical social and communication skills that students can use in real‑world settings.

Students explore how to:

  • Start and maintain conversations
  • Communicate confidently with adults
  • Navigate new or unfamiliar social situations

Through guided activities and discussion, students build the confidence to communicate more effectively and feel better equipped to manage situations that require independence.

These exercises help students understand their role within a team and how positive collaboration leads to more effective and enjoyable group experiences.

3. Speaking in Groups & Public Settings

Many young people experience anxiety when speaking in front of others, whether in class discussions, group work or presentations. This theme introduces students to practical tools for speaking with greater confidence in group and public settings.

Students learn strategies to:

  • Manage nerves and anxiety when speaking
  • Organise thoughts clearly
  • Contribute to group discussions
  • Build confidence through gradual, supported practice

The emphasis is on participation and personal progress rather than performance, helping students feel more comfortable expressing themselves in a range of settings.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, students will:

  • Feel more confident in everyday social interactions
  • Have practical tools to manage nerves and self‑doubt
  • Communicate more effectively with peers and adults
  • Feel better prepared for work experience and increasing independence
  • Develop skills that support wellbeing, confidence and personal growth
